non-panic approach to this terrible disease is an occasion to applaud

As stated on the back cover of Ms. Bucciarelli's book: "As many as five million adults in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease today, and that number will continue to grow as the population ages". Obviously the need for a readable, clear and concise, non-panic approach to this terrible disease is an occasion to applaud. Written as both primer and handbook Bucciarelli's book is far from the slap-dash "idiot's guide". Here is a thoughtful compendium of indispensable information that weds "best practices", first steps with pro-activity, social and personal history with broad and individual health concerns and implications. There are umbrella discussions of the disease's basic causes, symptoms, diagonses and treatments;
living with the disease, being a caregiver, and planning ahead. Chapters are further atomized in specific relevant sections and questions about the disease and its treatment. There is an appendix of important resources and an easy to use index.The visual layout of Ms. Bucciarelli's book is not only a paean to the graphic design but functions as a color-coded guide to specific areas in which one can quickly scan to get relevant information. Each page has helpful hints and location of sorely needed information beyond the scope of the book. Preparation for the doctor's visit, clinical trials, how to create a checklist and appointment log are a few of the many suggestions Bucciarelli places on the pages. Ms. Bucciarelli's in Alzheimer;s Disease has written a significant book on a very difficult, frightening, and tragic subject. She articulates each stage of the disease and treatment with dignity and clarity. She also provides a much needed critical context for society as well as a hands-on manual for individual and family. (Without being political Ms. Bucciarelli has given us more than enough reasons to write to our congressional representatives to fund research on Alzheimer's.Ms. Bucciarelli's Alzheimer's Disease is compassionate, clear, honest and highly insightful. It is a must-read for the medical community and the growing community of Alzheimer's patients and caregivers.

a MUST read for anyone impacted by Alzheimer's disease

This slim volume packs an extraordinary amount of useful information about Alzheimer’s disease. Its tone is upbeat, practical and balanced. The narrative is complemented by icon-identified definitions, notes, references and web resources in the page margins. Additional material is furnished in a companion CD-ROM. As I perused its pages, I thought “this book should be ‘required reading’ for anyone with a loved one diagnosed with this increasingly common disease.”

An excellent contribution!

This rich little volume is an excellent compilation of important medical information, sage counsel and practical "how to" advice to those dealing with Alzheimer's disease - highly informative for lay people as well as useful for medical professionals. Bucciarelli's work is tightly organized and sequenced, tracking an actual case study, making good use of a question-answer format for sharpness and clarity, and providing a generous selection of citations and references to the internet and to the disc accompanying the book. "Alzheimer's Disease" is dense with candid, meticulously researched information, presented in an economical, compelling and highly readable style both sensitive and forthright at the same time. I highly recommend it to anyone generally interested in the disease and have already suggested it to several acquaintances now coping with Alzheimer's at a very personal level. Bucciarelli has published an important contribution to the literature, one that will find good use across a wide and diverse readership.
