Through the stories of children in foster care, Dr. Heineman shows that we must all learn how to be in a relationship. In the treatment of trauma, clinicians must first help children open themselves up to new people, strangers who will likely leave again. It is through the building of trust and contact that children create the safety to heal. This is true for all of us as well.
An important read for anyone working with foster children.

A great book!

Having been writing, speaking and teaching for years about doing something more helpful than throwing psychotropic medicines at youth “in the system” due to issues attributable to trauma; I am delighted that Dr. Heineman has used her long experience in working with foster children to write this 5 star book. As founder and CEO of A Home Within, she has developed incredible expertise in dealing with an often very difficult population. And she has the stories to tell to help her pass on to others her extensive knowledge.

Toni Heineman has written a wonderful book. Drawing on several theories and offering case studies to illustrate every idea, Toni Heineman gives the reader a perspective on understanding and helping traumatized youth. Her ideas apply not only to psychotherapists, but also to a variety of professionals in different settings -- teachers, teaching assistants, summer camp directors, guidance counselors, leaders of support groups. I highly recommend this book.
