For over 24 years, Howard has been a dedicated practitioner of hatha yoga, and has been teaching yoga for the last 19 years in the Bay Area of California. Howard also has a M.A. in counseling psychology and is a former psychotherapist. The only `diet' book you need.

Clear, comprehensive, and backed up by extensive research, this book does a super job of explaining how we can achieve and maintain a healthy weight while eating a varied and balanced diet of foods we like. Every day we are bombarded diet ideas that focus on deprivation and narrow and sometimes bizarre food choices. They work in the short term but I find that they are not only boring but also drain my energy. By explaining clearly how our body and metabolism work, VanEs illustrates that you don’t have to confine yourself to the restrictions of the diets currently in vogue – the paleo, 5 and 2, etc.
I like the fact that he regards eating as something that should be an enjoyable experience. I also like the fact that he covers common supplements, points out why processed foods need to be avoided, values taste, and provides a simple way to remember appropriate portion sizes.
Of particular value is his focus on the psychological aspect of managing your weight. Nothing makes me reach for a bar of chocolate faster than looking in a mirror and deciding that once again I am failing to lose weight, that I never will lose weight, that… The self-hypnosis and self-affirmation chapters really spoke to me, as did the chapter on the role stress plays in weight gain which included multiple simple ways you can calm your spirit while you rev up your metabolism.
The only diet book you need.

A diverse and broad collection of concepts made accessible - a great guide for finding the joy in eating healthy

This book is a great resource for anyone who wants to develop and maintain good eating habits in a way that feels good. It addresses a broad and diverse collection of concepts related to weight balance and presents them in straight forward and common sense terms. The underlying basis for each of the 50 concepts is explained clearly and simply (and referenced for those that are interested in learning more), and the concepts are made accessible with great suggestions for how to adopt them into everyday life. It's a great book to have laying around and read each day - check off which of the concepts you already apply and try a new one each week. It's a refreshing approach that takes the sound principles that underlie many of the diet trends and brings them out of isolation, explains them and shows us how to use these principles to create our own nutritional plans/habits that let us enjoy what we eat.

Helpful, Comprehensive, & Realistic

The great thing about the I Hate Dieting Diet is that it starts off acknowledging how 95% of diets fail, namely because they prompt people to use unhealthy, get-thin-quick strategies, which don’t attend to what’s healthy or realistic for the body, or, for that matter, mental and emotional health. Everyone needs to eat, and it shouldn’t become a source of stress, guilt, and shame. There’s no reason why eating and exercise should be torturous chores—they are natural and necessary components to living, not death sentences!
The book gives readers 50 strategies to personalize a weigth loss plan.. The book also offers a lot of information ,how you can supplement your diet with tech aids, massage work, acupuncture, and other things we don’t normally think about when we think “diet.”
So many crash diets focus on very limited, particular strategies without lending a lot of attention to HOW these strategies affect the body. It’s not just about what you eat! It’s really important for readers to understand that managing stress, getting good sleep, and paying attention to digestive health, brain health, etc. are integral to a successful diet. All in all, a healthy, realistic, and accessible book for all readers trying to live healthily!
