Powerful, Useful, and A Heart-Rendering Story

This book is a success from the front cover all the way through. It's title alone is powerful; can tear the buyer up while pulling him/her into the text. If this is fiction, I believe that the facts have only been adjusted to highlight the message[s]. As one famous and successful writer has said, "Fiction is the truth in the lie." I know with certainty that David J Brown personally conversed at length with that man and shared on par the principles involved. This is a great book.

Resilient, the one word that leaps from pages of this solid book is that of one learning to how to survive and becoming resilient. From the early pages of this book to the early years of Clinton Flanagan’s life, hardship came early and often for this boy turned man throughout his journey. From the cold and lonely nights that swept through Clinton’s childhood home, to the cold and lonely nights of relationships that continued to sweep through Clinton’s early adulthood. Instead of making excuses for this treatment, as many of today’s generation would surely do, Clinton bears his hardships like a badge of courage, later turning this badge of courage into a badge of service and action for others. Much like the Blacksmith’s of old, forging raw metal, thrust into the fire and later beaten down many times, only until it is strong enough, Clinton endures and comes out the other side of his journey a much stronger man for it. What can be learned from the couple hundred pages of this great book (that I couldn’t put down once I started to read it, thinking the last chapter surely had to be the worst challenge faced by Flanagan)? My reading of this book, took me on an adventure of soul searching of both Flanagan and myself. Only when you finish this great book will you truly understand why “Daddy Had to Say Goodbye.”

I've known David for many years. He has always spoken exactly what was on his mind. His honesty and no nonsense approach to life is well documented in this book. I personally spent time with David in the EMS field. His ability to relive, and take us with him are raw and emotionally charged. Even though we spent many, many hours together both off and on duty... I learned more about how he became the person he is today from reading this insightful and well-written book. It is not only my pleasure to know him but to highly recommend this book as an addition to your library. You cannot read this without being moved and share in his life experiences. Ryc Lyden
