Dr. Bruce Roseman has been a Family Doctor in private practice in Manhattan for 30 years and is affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital where he holds joint appointments in the departments of Family Medicine and Ob/Gyn. He has served as medical editor for several food/health-related books and magazines including The Olive Oil Cookbook, The Low Cholesterol Oat Cure, Whittle’s The Health Report, Big Bird Goes to the Doctor (Sesame Street) and as a medical columnist for Woman’s World. He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs as a medical expert, including Live Wire (PBS), The Human Condition (NPR), Good Day New York, The Queen Latifah Show, and The Joan Lunden Show, and has been featured in magazines such as Guideposts and Parent. He is the author of A Kid Just Like Me, which details a popular method he invented to teach children with learning disabilities to read, while working with his son. Low carb diet that's probably too lenient

Need another diet book? You could do worse than this one. I praise its recognition that it is carbs (not fat) that make us fat, its unconventional view that exercise is not very effective in weight loss, and for its miscellany of helpful dieting advice. Yet the book doesn't succeed in proving that some foods are addictive. Yes, people often eat too many donuts, but isn't that just because they taste good? Further, the diet seems permissive both in the choice of foods and the total amount of food that's allowed. But I'm getting way ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning.
In “The Addictocarb Diet”, Bruce Roseman writes that bread, potatoes and some other high-carb foods are addictive; they stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain in the same way as do alcohol and cocaine. Because of this, they must be treated similarly, and that means abstinence. Roseman claims his diet cures the addiction by “identifying and eliminating the most addictive and lethal carbohydrates, and by promoting fruits.” Roseman says the “addictocarbs” are bread, potatoes, pasta, flour, rice, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, fruit juice and soda.
The diet attempts to lessen or control cravings, which are a defining characteristic of addiction. The diet begins with a detox period of 3 days during which the dieter drinks only liquid shakes, which do not contain any addictocarbs. The shake recipes are provided in the book, and the ingredients are easily found in grocery stores.
After the 3 day detox, a two week period of rehab follows. During this time, the dieter can consume none of the 9 addictocarbs, although some lower-carb alternatives are allowed. Here it should be noted that Dreamfields Pasta products, recommended in the book, may not be suitable. After the publication of the book, Dreamfields settled a lawsuit in which they were accused of making misleading diet claims about their products. Plaintiffs claimed the products were not low carb and caused blood sugar to spike.
The dieter must choose which Addictocarbs they will banish from their diet completely and which they can allow on a limited basis. Roseman claims that those decisions can now be made without the pull of addiction. Roseman realistically cautions the dieter that they must give up something; sacrifices must be made. He recommends that dieters give up the addictocarb that causes them the most problems.
Other topics include gluten and lactose, vegetarianism, how to deal with snack foods, fast food, and eating out. As a good doctor should, Roseman explains how obesity can cause diabetes, a disorder that can lead to blindness, amputations, and premature death. Roseman criticizes competing diets like Atkins and South Beach, saying they are difficult to stay with, don’t control cravings, and restrict healthy foods like fruit. The book offers numerous recipes, which use common ingredients and are easy to prepare.
As for the author's criticism of Atkins-type diets, defenders of those diets would likely say that eating lean meat and protein sufficiently controls cravings and that low-carb vegetables, not fruit, should be eaten. They believe fruits are "nature's candy" and their portion sizes must be strictly limited. Atkins-type diets are based on counting carbs and they believe that most people can only consume 50-100 grams of carbs per day to maintain (and not gain) weight. The addictocarb diet takes a different approach, and doesn't involve counting carbs. Rather, Dr. Roseman argues that fruits, though high in carbs, have special benefits that outweigh other considerations; they provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and seem to have beneficial cleansing effects in the body.
Whether certain foods are addictive is not really proven. We're not told enough about the research to form any opinion of its worth. Any attempt to differentiate between regular carbs and addictocarbs in terms of addiction should at least tell us how the brain pleasure centers react to the one category as opposed to the other. Wouldn't bananas stimulate the brain's pleasure centers just as much as rice? Are there wide individual variations? These issues aren't addressed, although they are probably beyond the scope of the book, would become too technical, or might not even be of interest to the average reader. But they would interest me.
At first glance, the diet seems strict, but since neither portion size, nor carbs are counted, the diet is lenient, perhaps even indulgent. As a low carb diet, it allows for an awful lot of carbs. The diet evens allows chocolate in very limited amounts! Rather than ban all addictocarbs, the diet allows the dieter to decide which addictocarbs they will abstain from, and those they will TRY to control. Also, Roseman's decision on whether to allow a particular food or recipe ingredient seems to be based on whether the item raises his blood sugar. I'm not sure whether testing just one person's blood sugar is sufficient, nor why the item's carb count wouldn't be a better gauge in determining its suitability for the diet.
Dr. Roseman writes that many patients tell him they "can't live" without chocolate. That really bothers me. And it bothers me that Roseman would try to accodomodate this, even with his dark chocolate only, 1-inch square per day regimen. Here we have a patient, probably pre-diabetic, looking at a future that includes sticking their fingers multiple times a day, injecting themselves with insulin, watching everything they eat, risking blindness and amputations, even early death, and yet they say they "can't live without chocolate." Though this book doesn't prove food addiction, I think that's the most powerful personal proof of it we could ever get.

If You Can't Eat Just One Piece of Cake or Bread, This Book Should Help You Cope

I have been saying for several years that I am addicted to bread, flour, and sugar. I know that when I don't eat them, my swelling goes down, I lose weight, and I feel better. I didn't need Dr Roseman to tell me that. But I did need him to tie some of this together for me from the perspective of it being a real addiction and dealing with that fact in my life. The fruit shakes do work to rein in the urges. Using food to get rid of the urge to eat is interesting to me. What is most important is that it works. This is not really a diet book although you will lose weight following it. It is a book about your relationship with certain foods and how much influence they have on your life and your health. I recommend this book highly if you have a problem with overeating and feel that certain carbs trigger it. You will find it helpful I think. I know that it has helped me. I am still working on this. I know that it will be a lifelong battle but I have more hope now that I will be able to deal with it. I have a long road ahead and a lot of weight to lose but the skills he has given me are helping.

Funny, enjoyable book, sensible and practical, a good read, and I've lost two solid pounds in 3 weeks without even trying.
By Always Thinking
One of my colleagues had gotten an early copy of this book, and following the advice in it, including the shakes, lost what appeared to be at least about 20 or more pounds, maybe 30, in no time flat (6 weeks?) and also appeared to be a lot more healthy and energetic. She said it was NO EFFORT at all. But buoyed by her quick success, I guess, she stopped her new protocol and fell back to baseline.
Well, her success had looked pretty good to me, so I got the book too, and, only wanting to lose 8 pounds, have lost about 2 in just three weeks or so, and just by sort of keeping in mind the advice. I haven't done anything, really, like making any special shakes or buying special pasta or anything like that. Not that I won't, I just haven't gone that far with it yet. Till now, I've just skimmed a lot of the book and am keeping in mind what the author says to avoid.
So with that little bit of education, I'm just watching what I'm choosing to eat, and noticing, and just "avoiding" those addicto-carbs. (I confess to eating some, but then watching and being aware, and avoiding the craving that inevitably arises.) And that's it! I'm already more energetic, too, as well as the couple pounds lighter.
This book is just the thing for us struggling with the typical American diet whether it's 200 pounds or the persistent last five that we want to lose while building our health.
The Addictocarb Diet is an easy read, by the way, full of humor, anecdotes and the author's personal experiences. For example, he talks about having gotten slim and then going out to dinner at a world-renowned NY restaurant with his thin friends and his thin wife; everything is fine and under control, but after having a couple bites of incredible bread he completely goes off the deep end and regains 10+ pounds in the following week or so. And he's funny about it! He made me laugh out loud, and in other spots, tears actually came to my eyes.
The book can be read in small portions, so that when I walk by and see it on my counter or table, I can stop and read a few pages, and feel amused and productive without having to devote two or three hours in a shot to reading. Though if I were on a plane or had a rainy weekend with no urgent projects, I would definitely want to read it through. I gave a copy to a friend who read it straight through - couldn't put it down.
Suitable for both men and women, too. Not a girly thing, and definitely not patronizing. Kudos to the good Dr. Roseman and thanks to him for his openness. I think he's really on to something. He knows his stuff.
