Sage Reddy is a writer, speaker, Life Coach, philosopher, blogger, foodie, musician, tinkerer, and a wisefool. One split second. That's all it took on the evening of Nov 6, 1990, and Sage's life would never be the same again. The near-fatal motorcycle wreck didn't just take away his ability to walk, it interrupted his youth—and its desperate need to express itself in life as we know it. After all the kicking and screaming, the life-altering crisis inspired him to dive deep into the ocean of human mind and consciousness. A fresh, new look at food

I didn't quite know what to expect when I began reading Oh, Shut Up And Eat by Sage Reddy. It's not a diet book or a cookbook. It's about creating a genuinely happy life, and how food is a good place to start. According to the author, how I live my life and relate to the people in it, is mirrored in how I eat my everyday food. Because, as he says, food does not lie.
Sage makes you examine the eating habits of Americans when compared to other cultures. Although we think we're "normal, we couldn't be more wrong. This should be apparent to us, since America are the most obese nation in the world, but it took this book to make me understand exactly why this is. It also opened my eyes as to why so many of us here are preoccupied with our bodies, why we're so obsessed with our weight. It also explains our neurotic eating habits. Just because you don't have a weight problem doesn't mean you know how to eat. I used to think skinny people don't have eating problems, but that's not true. A lot of them do, we just don't see it. We see fat people and we immediately think they have food problems.
Not all overweight people overeat or stuff themselves with chocolate. And no matter what we do, some of us don't lose weight. I know someone who began eating "healthy" by giving up all processed foods, including her Lean Cuisines. She still gained weight! No matter how much salad, fruits and healthy foods she eats, she's still overweight. I know someone else who eats very little. She just eats supper around 8pm every evening, and she too has a weight problem. All this makes you wonder if it's just hopeless, if some of us are simply doomed. But after reading this book, I learned that my friend has been on a "Sumo Diet". Like those obese Sumo Wrestlers, she starves herself all day long and rewards herself with a huge meal at the end of the day -- when the body is no longer capable of digesting food. Starving the body (when you should be eating) slows down your metabolism and eating (when you should be sleeping) is how you put on the weight -- even if you don't eat much food.
Think butter is unhealthy? What about avoiding saturated fats? Do you think it's all about calories? Do you think it's all about WHAT you eat and HOW you eat doesn't matter? This book will change your mind about a lot of nonsense we Americans have bought into about "healthy" and "unhealthy."
This is a really fun book to read. The food quotes made me chuckle and the story of his friend was quite entertaining. The author has certainly done his homework. He is obviously wise, but he does use research to verify his insights. The writing style is casual even when he gets into serious topics. He grabbed my attention with facts, then kept me interested with wit and humor. You think you're reading a book about food, but he gets into everything from sex to Feng Shui. He explains how everything from your thoughts to how your environment influences your daily food habits.
If I have a complaint with this book, it's that there's far too much information and wisdom to be absorbed in one reading. But this won't keep you from incorporating the four food habits into your life right away. I'm ready to begin changing my life as of NOW.

Absolute Gem

When I first got this book, I expected a short guide with a few good tips on food and nutrition. Boy, was I wrong! Oh, Shut Up And Eat is a well-structured guide to eating in particular and life in general. Expect to discover new and profound stuff about your eating habits, no matter how much or how little you know about food.
The book is well organized and I love how it flows. And I really appreciate the "take away" at the end of each the four food habits where all the information presented thus far is neatly summarized. This makes it super useful, believe me. This also makes it easy to remember and implement the four food habits.
Who knew there's so much psychology and philosophy behind food & eating? I like how the author draws upon Eastern wisdom and Western research to get his message across, and he does it with wit and humor. He gets into serious stuff but doesn't take himself too seriously.
Like me, perhaps you're tired of books that are dry and boring and difficult to read. Not this one. This book is both inspiring and fun to read. The author has packed so much good information and wisdom into these pages that you'll want to go back and read it again and again. I'm sure you'll find new gems each time.

Very Good

What an awesome book! Funny and fun to read. The Q&A "true or false" chapter at the beginning of the book was a perfect start to a book that was easy to read and hard to put down. It love how it flows. Good structure.
Author is a talented writer with a gift for storytelling. He's got a head of a researcher and the heart of a novelist. His case study is both interesting and in-depth. It's as if I actually know the protagonist of his story, though obviously I don't. So true to life.
The tone the book is irreverent yet respectful. It's relaxed and yet there's this palpable urgency to the author's voice. He gets across profound wisdom with a playfulness of a child. He communicates bitter truths sweetened with wit. All this makes for one fascinating read.
If you're NOT looking for quick weight-loss, if you truly care about your overall wellbeing (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual), if you want to take charge of your life (starting with your food habits), then you'll find this book both useful and inspiring. And I promise you, like me, you'll be reading it again and again.
And I agree with the author "the best diet is no diet".
