About the Author
Dr. Stephen Sideroff is a Clinical Psychologist and an internationally recognized expert in resilience, optimal performance, addiction, neurofeedback, and alternative approaches to stress and mental health. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, as well as the Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Ethics. He is the former Clinical Director of the Stress Strategies program of UCLA/Santa Monica Hospital and the former Clinical Director of Moonview Treatment and Optimal Performance Center. A Guide to Self- Discovery

Every year people purchase thousands of self-help books, spend millions of dollars on self-improvement seminars, self-development programs, coaches, trainers and therapists. Unfortunately the results are not very spectacular. Actually the results are rather dismal. If you have been searching for an effective program that will help you actually achieve your goals, then you should take a serious look at The Path: Mastering the Nine Pillars of Resilience and Success by Stephen Sideroff.

First a word of caution. This book does not propose to be a magic pill. And simply reading the book will not produce the results you are seeking. This is a guide book with lots of information about how and why we act the way we do. And if that was all the book did, it would not be significantly different from many other books on the market.

But The Path is different. It is very different in that Dr. Sideroff takes the reader step by step through a number of different exercises all designed to help you achieve your goals. In the book, there are nine pillars that support a healthy approach to living. In order to master these nine pillars, you will need to do the exercises. This is actually a guided self-discovery process. It takes time, energy and commitment. But if you are serious about achieving your goals, this is a process that will work.

The first six chapters of the book set the foundation for the nine pillars. Chapters 7 through 15 cover the nine pillars: 1) Relationship with Self 2) Relationship with Others 3) Relationship with Something Greater 4) Physical Balance and Mastery 5) Thinking and Mental Balance and Mastery 6) Emotional Balance and Mastery 7) Presence – Gateway for The Path 8) Flexibility and 9) Power – The Ability to Get Things Done. The final three chapters tie things together, go deeper and look into the future.

Throughout the book, Dr. Sideroff explains how our Primitive Gestalts – our locked in ways of thinking and behaving based on early childhood attempts at security and survival – control our present actions. Our Primitive Gestalts operate at a subconscious level. We are unaware of the control they have over our lives.

There is a lot of theory of human behavior contained in this book. But it is explained in terms that anyone can understand. You will gain a greater awareness of why we act the way we do. And as Dr. Sideroff explains, “The process of change or personal development always begins with an increased awareness, a noticing.”

I believe to get the most from this book, you will want to read it, work through it multiple times. With each interaction with the book, you will gain a deeper understanding of the concepts and of yourself. Continuing to do the exercises will keep you on the Path.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is on a path of self-improvement and is not making satisfactory progress.

Very Effective Book on How to Mange Stress and live a Resilient Life

I have followed Dr. Sideroff's work in the field of Stress Management and Biofeedback for over 30 years. This book compiles the best advice he has accumulated over this period of time helping thousands of people learn to live healthy and productive lives. This is not simply an interesting read, but a carefully crafted plan to help develop and practice getting on the path to a healthy and resilient life. It's at the top of my list for a practical and effective self-help book.

Sideroff’s “The Path” serves as both roadmap and entertaining tour guide for your journey to resilience and success. As a map, it guides you through the landscapes of your childhood learning/training, the rough terrain of self-criticism, the flatlands of living life on “auto pilot,” and points you in the direction of how to maintain a steady course on the road to self-trust, balanced living, and optimal well-being. Along the ride, the easy-to-read yet fascinating book is full of interesting anecdotes, fascinating research studies (explained in comprehensive but understandable terms), and inspirational quotes from scientists, philosophers, and spiritual icons. Like the roadside attractions that add depth and experience to epic road trips, Sideroff includes nearly 300 steps (i.e., suggested activities) and “sign posts” for how to implement the book’s content.

I devoured Sideroff’s words during my first read through: “The Path” was a revelation. It exposed me to many new ideas and added complexity to not-so-new ideas. The book became my go-to for personal practice ideas and concepts to share with my clients. It sparks insight, normalizes our resistance and difficulties, and motivates us to try out the nine pillars in our own lives.

Due to the plethora of highlights and sticky notes that fill my original copy, I just procured another copy and am excited to peruse its clean pages with new eyes. Undoubtedly, “The Path” will be a map that provides wise guidance and insights throughout life. I’m thrilled to have such a handy tool along with me for the ride!
