Weight Loss is the least of it! Let go and change your Mindset!

The story moves you through the life of Melissa and not only gives you an insight into the obvious struggles of her weight transformation, but the keen intelligence that moved her forward intellectually, but in many ways kept her from achieving her weight loss goals. I felt she was incredibly brave to give such a personal insight to how she, like we all have done at some point, self-sabotaged her best intentions, only to recognize these behaviors and make a cognitive change. Melissa overcame her deepest fears, came to love Melissa and the body she was in at many stages and celebrated each success. Loved the way the book is laid out with the note pages at the end of each chapter so that the reader can start their own personal inventory whether it is to lose weight or succeed at any other possible goal. A great, inspirational read! I hope she keeps us posted with her personal progress!

I recommend this book to anyone who is on the quest for better health or is simply exhausted of trying multiple diets, workouts, and programs to loose weight and haven't achieved their goal. As a health coach, one of the first things I tell my clients is: "change your thoughts and the body will follow," but my clients tell me "it is easier said then done." This book helps you get it done! Finally, I have a book to share with them. Melissa's book shares her inspiring transformation story, motivates you, outlines a simple plan you can implement daily to stay on track, and most importantly, it allows the reader to make journal entries and take notes to stay connected to the process. Most people forget to work on the mental transformation, only focusing on the body. They loose the weight only to gain it all back in the next few months, sometimes even weeks.

Hollis's book, as usual, is truly excellent. My husband and I read it aloud over the winter, as I was coming to a new cycle in recovering from grief and loss. Hollis makes very complicated ideas accessible, without losing the rich, deep meaning of the Jungian concepts. I talked about this book and recommended it to several clients. This is a book that helps one grow through any difficult time. Hollis helps us understand "hauntings" as complexes. I especially appreciated his section on guilt, shame and betrayals. He ends with a hopeful chapter on living the unlived life.

Outstanding!
This book has a wealth of knowledge, easy to read and understand. I hope to make some changes for the better in my diet.
I like this book a lot because it has wonderful stuff that we all need to have a great health and lifestyle. It is worth to keep a copy for everyone who is interested in wellness and nutrition. I am following his tips and started feeling vibrant again.

About the Author
Elliot Aronson is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Cruz and one of the most renowned social psychologists in the world. In 2002, he was chosen as one of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. Dr. Aronson is the only person in the 120-year history of the American Psychological Association to have received all three of its major awards: for distinguished writing, distinguished teaching, and distinguished research. Many other professional societies have honored his research and teaching as well. These include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which gave him its highest honor, the Distinguished Scientific Research award; the American Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, which named him Professor of the Year of 1989; the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, which awarded him the Gordon Allport prize for his contributions to the reduction of prejudice among racial and ethnic groups; and the William James Award from the Association for Psychological Science. In 1992, he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A collection of papers and tributes by his former students and colleagues, The Scientist and the Humanist, celebrates his contributions to social psychological theory and its application to real-world problems. Dr. Aronson’s own recent books for general audiences include Mistakes Were Made (but not by ME), with Carol Tavris, and a memoir, Not by Chance Alone: My Life as a Social Psychologist.

Tim Wilson did his undergraduate work at Williams College and Hampshire College and received his PhD from the University of Michigan. Currently Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, he has published numerous articles in the areas of introspection, attitude change, self-knowledge, and affective forecasting, as well as a recent book, Redirect: The Surprising New Science of Psychological Change. His research has received the support of the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Mental Health. He has been elected twice to the Executive Board of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology and is a Fellow in the American Psychological Society and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2009, he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2015 he received the William James Fellows Award from the Association for Psychological Science. Wilson has taught the Introduction to Social Psychology course at the University of Virginia for more than 30 years. In 2001 he was awarded the University of Virginia All-University Outstanding Teaching Award, and in 2010 was awarded the University of Virginia Distinguished Scientist Award.

Robin Akert graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she majored in psychology and sociology. She received her PhD in experimental social psychology from Princeton University. She is currently a Professor of Psychology at Wellesley College, where she was awarded the Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching early in her career. She publishes primarily in the area of nonverbal communication, and recently received the AAUW American Fellowship in support of her research. She has taught the social psychology course at Wellesley College for nearly 30 years.

Sam Sommers earned his B.A. from Williams College and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Since 2003 he has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. His research examines issues related to stereotyping, prejudice, and group diversity, with a particular interest in how these processes play out in the legal domain. He has won multiple teaching awards at Tufts, including the Lerman-Neubauer Prize for Outstanding Teaching and Advising and the Gerald R. Gill Professor of the Year Award. He was also inducted into the Tufts Hall of Diversity for his efforts to promote an inclusive climate on campus for all students. He has testified as an expert witness on issues related to racial bias, jury decision-making, and eyewitness memory in criminal trial proceedings in seven states. His first general audience book on social psychology was published in 2011, titled Situations Matter: Understanding How Context Transforms Your World. His next book, titled Your Brain on Sports, is co-authored with L. Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated and will be published in early 2016.

She has worked extensively in exercise science and athlete performance and founded Seattle Performance Medicine in 2003 and over the past decade her primary focus has been on obesity. In 2015, she established the Cooper Center for Metabolism where she diagnoses and treats metabolic causes of type 2 diabetes, obesity and infertility. She educates healthcare professionals and the public on the science of metabolism through her non-profit foundation, The Diabesity Research Foundation.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   She is KING TV's 'Get Fit' team doctor appearing twice monthly on KING-5 Morning News as a regular contributor. Dr. Cooper is a frequent lecturer and speaker to medical students and healthcare professionals across the country, including Endocrinology Grand Rounds at Brown University.  She is often interviewed in the media on the topics of metabolism and obesity, sharing scientific information explaining why obesity is a medical problem.

Finally, somebody who's in it for the science and wellbeing of her patients. Not for the shock factor of a new diet.

Thank goodness we have Emily Cooper! She's possibly the only physician in North America who's not only had the "balls" to dive into the mega burly science of our metabolic systems, but had the courage to face the tremendous amount of resistance from the millions of voices preaching "Calories in, Calories out" thinking. For most people who want a quick fix, this isn't the book, or the doctor for you.... But if, like Neo in the Matrix, and you want to know the truth, this book is the BLUE PILL. There's no easy way around it, dealing with weight struggles and metabolic hurdles is scary business if you've ever been through it. If you are one of the MILLIONS who have been at a loss as to why, no matter how much you exercise or count calories, you simply don't lose body fat, you will find REAL, evidence -based answers in this book. It takes a physician / scientist who is brave enough to dive into the near infinite complexity of metabolism to lay it out, but more so, it takes patients who are also brave enough to face these problems the hard way: With science, not diets.

One more thing: We absolutely MUST change our culture and language around overweight and obesity. Calling people "lazy, stupid, and gluttonous" (even hinting towards it in research) is NOT helping to fix the problem. Its making it worse. If you read this book and still have the opinion that people who struggle with weight are somehow weak in the mind, you simply need to 1) Read the book AGAIN, and 2) Examine everybody in your life that you care about, because chances are that obesity is touching your own inner circles.

Need more self-help information since specialists are scarce

The information was very helpful in understanding why some metabolisms are not "playing by the rules". However, there was little guidance on what I could do for myself other than to go find a metabolic specialist such as Dr. Cooper - and we are on opposite coasts. However, I have been focussing on eating frequent meals with lots of low starch vegetables and have lost 8 pounds painlessly. Here is hoping that I can continue this way.

Finally a book about weight problems and metabolism, we who suffer with this problem have been on every diet. We lose a little then gain back even more. Everyone you know has a suggestion for you!

Walking would be easier if you just drop about 50 lbs. really, have you ever thought about how we feel as we diet year after year. Dr. Cooper has answers in her book. I am so happy to see someone that is actually working on the problem.

Endotoxins are produced in a toxic colon that go into the blood and trigger the inflammation response causing leptin and insulin resistance. LPS is connected to false hunger but also many diseases beyond all of those of the gut such as IBS, Crohn’s, diverticulitis, SIBO, Gut Dysbiosis and Toxic Gut Syndrome associated with many mental health issues via the Gut / Brain axis. Weight Loss for Those Who Can't Lose Weight

This is the best book on weight loss I've read. It's for everyone, like me, who has spent years struggling with diet and exercise and still can't lose weight, no matter what they do. This book offers hope, because it addresses the damage in your body from toxic chemical exposures that make your body gain weight, and prevent it from having the ability to lose. By correcting these malfunctions through natural means (including dietary charges), excess weight falls off as the body heals. If diets don't do it for you, read this book.

Quest for Wellness Makes a Difference

This author says, “We live in a sound bit world and catch a glimpse here and there about what is healthy. It’s always changing.” I agree.

Before we met Dr. Mark Sherwood; I knew he was an ex–professional baseball player and a 24–year retired veteran of the Tulsa Police Department, where he logged a decade of courageous service on the department's SWAT Team. My husband and I looked forward to talking with him about his new book.

My husband and I had the privilege of meeting Mark Sherwood a few months ago at the ICRS conference in Orlando, Florida. He had been encouraging us in our eating plan for weeks via email and a few phone calls. We were both thrilled to meet him, see and hear how he lives out his plan. But what first got me about meeting Dr. Mark Sherwood was his passion for wellness. He had a heart to see people get well so they can really “live” life not just hobble through it.

I’ve tried many “diets” throughout the years; especially after giving birth to three children and having baby pounds still with me after each birth. I went to weekly meetings, weighing in and learning what foods would help me lose weight not necessarily make me feel energized or well. I did lose the weight but could not maintain it because I didn’t learn how to eat healthy in the first place. My husband and I started our quest for wellness June 22, 2015, it’s an experience that has us both energized and losing weight.

I have lost 10 pounds since my husband and I have made changes in our lifestyle and in the way we eat spelled out in, “The Quest for Wellness plan.” I’ve tried for many years to lose 10 pounds (or more) and have only been able to maintain the weight I was currently at; so to have lost this much since June 22nd I’m elated. My husband is too! (He’s lost more)

I’ve known some of these principles like drinking lots of water and eating a variety of veggies, taking vitamins and using holistic drops but the plan he has laid out has made me look at the bigger picture which is “wellness” not just losing weight.

I have discovered first hand that the little steps I’ve made so far make a huge difference. I was surprised at how just changing my sleeping pattern, eating more veggies, measuring out my protein and fruit and exercising less could make such an impact on my life. I’ve lost weight but more importantly the pain I’ve had in my feet is completely gone in the left foot and in my right I have a little pain in my heel. I don’t feel exhausted, but rested. I feel satisfied after we eat and in between meals. That is huge. I’m not killing myself at the gym in order to lose weight. It’s mind boggling. . It’s working. I have more energy and have lost a dress size.

I liked how the author deals with the whole person in this book. We aren’t just exercise, mindless machines, we are humans with many aspects to our personhood; each aspect needs watering and nurturing to bloom and grow. I like how the author starts with doable baby steps and when we get that down we can move to the next level; slow and steady wins.

The First Phase is broken down into categories; under the categories Physical, Emotional; Intellectual; Spiritual the author lists:

“Physical; Move more, add two veggies to every day, increase water (All doable”)
“Emotional; Identify your stressors, Monitor your self-talk”
“Intellectual; Choose or start a “course” or identify a new nonfiction book to read”
“Spiritual; Spend 5 – 10 minutes in silence each day, Read the Bible 10 minutes”

Dr. Mark goes on to explain the first phase in more detail with many options. He asks readers to look at your obligations – Forgive – then let it go. “Life is a marathon, not a sprint. The best things in life are sometimes slow.”

This author says “Most of the things we truly value do not happen instantly.” “Having a healthy body and mind always requires effort, dedication, and commitment. Nothing of real value comes easy.”

A Refreshing Wellness Book that is Worth Keeping Around

The Quest for Wellness—A Practical & Personal Wellness Plan for Optimum Health in Your Body, Mind, Emotions & Spirit by author Mark Sherwood, ND with Michele Neil-Sherwood is a wonderful wellness book whether you are beginning this journey or have been traveling this road for quite a bit. It is easy to read and understand. The chapters are divided and arranged in a logical, organized manner. They are loaded with practical advice and tips for things to help improve health. This is one of the few self help books that actually makes sense. How refreshing! It is easy to follow and addresses day to day problems many, if not all, of us face and provides sound solutions. One point the book makes is that all health is intertwined: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual and Spiritual. If just one is out of balance, so are you. All health is reviewed in this book because it is all important to be well. The ultimate goal is improvement in all of the four areas so that complete wellness is the result. This book provides tools to help achieve a better way to live and be healthy. It is a filled with tips and suggestions throughout the book that are practical and priceless.

The ideas in the book are not entirely new, but they are worthy of consideration and if followed will improve your health greatly. I was reminded of simple things that I needed to do, such as move around a bit more, eat healthier, cut sugar, control stress and rest at least seven hours. For those not accustomed to feeding their soul, it recommends daily nourishment by reading the Bible each day. The suggestions made are easy to do and will over time completely change one's lifestyle for the better. This would be a great book for a group that wants to change unhealthy habits and learn to live in balance. It is a book worth keeping around for reference. I will read it a second time. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It received a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy of his book was provided to me for my honest opinion.

I didn't purchase my copy on Amazon, because I purchased mine directly from Mark. I'm blessed to be a patient of both Dr. Mark and his wife, and they are helping me change my life. So far I've lost 30 pounds and am working on losing 30+ more. They have a very holistic approach to health and wellness and this book outlines their philosophy - the same philosophy that they've been teaching me directly. They describe ways to make changes in all areas of your life to help you obtain overall wellness, starting with easy, small changes that anyone can make and gradually expanding those changes as you're ready to move on. It's not a diet, but a life-style change that absolutely can change your life!
