In When Loving Him Hurts, expert psychologist Sue Hickey takes you on a deep and inner healing journey through the experiences of her long-term client, Philippa Sklaar, who was in three abusive relationships before she understood that the healing had to begin with herself and not the relationship. It contains their combined insights, as well as the stories of women who have walked this long and painful road. Sue Hickey, has run a private counseling practice for almost thirty years during which time she has counseled hundreds of women and couples through reconciliations, divorces and more importantly, journey’s of self discovery and self empowerment. She has run support groups for abused women and for women who seek to live a life with more depth and reflection. Philippa Sklaar, an American is a domestic abuse survivor and knows only too well the struggle of why we “don’t just leave”. It took three abusive marriages (her second was physically abusive) to finally learn that the solution lay with herself. It was too simple an answer to blame the men. this book is long overdue

finally a book that delves into emotional trauma that woman go through when dealing with the men in their lives who get enjoyment out of mental cruelty, mind games and emotional blackmail which successfully seems to make the woman feel like she is crazy and everything is her fault when exactly the opposite is actually happening, so much food for thought and tools for how to cope with situations that before you felt where hopeless now gives one the knowledge with how to cope with a different mindset. Thank you from all those woman out there who live with someone like this and struggle on a daily basis with low self esteem for something that isn't even their fault. This is a must read for all woman out there.

Speaking about the unspeakable

This is a unique book as it combines the wisdom of an experienced therapist with the voices of abused women. Sue skillfully guides the reader through a diversity of abusers and abused with sensitivity, compassion and care. Her practical approach to healing possibilities and actively creating different outcomes is in equal parts refreshing and grounded. Philippa Sklaar shares an incredibly forthright perspective of her progress from abused to recovered which cannot fail to touch a deep chord in any woman. Rounded off by the addition of other women’s stories many parts of this book could apply to us all. I would highly recommend it to my clients and friends alike.

Through the eyes of an abusing husband

This was an eye opener for me, as an abusing husband.
For the first time, I could see through my wife's eyes, how she was feeling.
Not only that, but I exchanged the concept of "the abused wife" to "the abused child who is now an adult man", and the key opened the locked safe to what had happened to me as a child. So I started to understand WHY I do what I do now to my wife, and am able to take ownership of my dysfunctional behavior, and start healing myself.
