And like many New Thought books
By Dr. Peter Fritz Walter
‘This Is Your Day: Purposely Engineering Your Breakthrough’ is a selfhelp book written in the New Thought Tradition. And like many New Thought books, to mention only Charles Haanel’s ‘Master Key System’ here, it’s written in a challenging tone.

I think I should first explain what I mean with ‘challenging tone.’ All New Thought books have in common that they urge the reader to change, to take life serious, to not waste time, and to believe in the power of self-love and self-assertion. Let me mention Albert Camus in this context who said ‘if you want to know yourself, you should assert yourself.’ And indeed, self-knowledge goes a long way in the making of personal success.

Readers who are unfamiliar with New Thought books may feel at times frustrated, taking the challenging tone of the book for an aggressive voice that seems to prod them to get moving! I had that same impression when starting to read the book but it vanished off once I understood that the author just expresses his passion about success in life, success he himself has experienced, and his intention to share his recipe for success.

That I may be accurate with this assessment is corroborated by a very clear-cut chapter, the last in Part I, entitled ‘It’s Supposed to Be Challenging.’

This being said, I should next talk a little about how the book is structured. It namely consists of two parts, and from the start I found Part II noteworthy and interesting as networking is not a topic to be found in traditional New Thought books as most of them were written during the 19th and the first half of the 20th century while globalization and the global network society began to exist only since about the 1980s. Hence, it is intriguing to see how the author connects this information with the content delivered in Part I of the book.

And here is a potential stumble stone for some readers as while the book is full of good ideas, those in Part II of the book are exposed in too much of a listing style without showing the coherence of the single arguments and the connection with the fundamental ideas contained in Part I of the book.

To give an example. Chapter 2 of Part II is about the ancient art of face reading. It’s an uncanny idea to bring that into a selfhelp book. The author explains the basic tenets of face reading and gives highly practical advice. But how to connect this information with the tenets of Part I of the book, which are all around perception, feeling worthy or unworthy, how to handle desire and focus the imagination, how to get around excuses, how to plan properly, and how to become ‘unstoppable,’ to use an expression coined by Brian Tracy.

It may be that the author believes that the reader has to do this integrative work himself or herself, but in such a case, it would have been useful to point this out in detail, and also, to add a conclusion to the book which is lacking. (The Afterword does not properly fulfill this purpose).

Also, there are streaks in the book where the information presented is too much out of context. Despite those little flaws however, the book overall is very useful. What I would want to laud especially are the two last chapters of Part II, ‘The Art of Having It Your Way’ and ‘Everyone Has An Agenda.’ There are books, as the one by James Borg which I have equally reviewed, that are just about persuasion. But it makes much more sense to me to discuss the subject within a book that has a larger contextual background, and that points out other important success strategies, for persuasion surely is only one of them.

Let me now add and comment on a few quotes from Part I of the book that I found especially well written and to the point.

When you step in front of the mirror, you are doing it from inside of yourself. You are seeing the outside version of you from the inside version of you. What you see in the mirror is the perfected image of your current level of self-perception. Your inside world is broadcast out for you to see in plain view. After all, everything that exists in the outward world, is only a reflection of the inward world. /16

This is an uncanny but very truthful observation which shows that all our life is a ‘processed reality’ in the sense that we cannot strip off our perception filters, which are our beliefs and our emotional hangups. A mirror is a very good example for how our outward perception is a reflection and a mirror for our inner reality and how this inner reality then impacts upon our regard upon life, and our self-image.

The only reason for ignorance today is willful ignorance, meaning that you willingly choose to not know something. That’s a tragedy in the truest sense of the word. But thankfully, it can easily be overcome through a genuine curiosity to learn, and a willingness to dismiss incorrect information. /18

I know that I have had huge financial losses in my life because of lacking information, yes, just stupidly so, not having all the facts. This is very true in all of business, and especially in real estate. If you buy a house and you do not really scrutinize all the details meticulously, you risk to pay too much for the property. But that’s not all. For you will not even notice your mistake until you sell the house and see you can’t get the price you want, and in my case, not even the price you paid for the property. So you lose, but that losing is entirely your fault, as a result of your ‘willful ignorance.’ You may think it was not really willful, but in a sense it was; it was comforting to not open the cards, it was comfortable to spare the work of comparing other properties.’ The wake-up call was coming to me after that disaster in the form of a book written by Donald Trump in which he says repeatedly that for one property he buys he compares in all the details at least 100 others! Imagine the amount of work that that implies. I got my lesson, and understood my failure, and how to overcome it.

Very useful I also find the author’s metaphors for life, first how to tender a garden, then how to cope with guilt, especially guilt created by adherence to a particular religion.

The great irony in this all is that in them wanting you not to have any desires, it is their desire that you have no desires, as they are driven by what they want. They want to see you free of desire, and they want their god to be the person who frees you from desire. /20

I think I do not need to comment on this brilliant observation. Please be reminded that one of the greatest selfhelp authors, Joseph Murphy, has warned in all his books to apply religious teachings to the letter. This is why he has re-interpreted both the Bible and the I Ching, using modern psychological language and helping many as a minister who were completely stuck in guilt and shame because they applied Bible teachings literally in their lives, experiencing the greatest misery one may imagine!

A persistent person with a desire of high intensity will not and cannot lose. Sure, they’ll have setbacks and sometimes even heartbreaking disappointments. But their desire to see what’s in their mind, in physical reality is so intense – their persistence is so unbreakable, that the possibility of failure is inevitably crushed by the dominance of their thoughts and actions. This is how you use your desire to overcome obstacles./22

The importance of desire cannot be overemphasized, while if you see that before the background of most religious teachings—also those of the East—you would not even dare to desire, you would not even dare to write a simple wish list! So be responsible what you take in for we are held responsible by the universe for all the information we take in. We are not supposed to stuff ourselves with information that just doesn’t fit into our overall worldview, and who does that is simply not responsible. So what the author stresses here is really important and his urging you as a reader to see the importance of desire makes sense to me.

You must remove all negativity from your mind. It has no place in your new life. Anytime a negative or doubtful thought enters your mind, immediately replace it with three positive thoughts. Negativity is a parasite that is always lurking, looking for a host to suck the life out of. If you are not proactively positive, you are inviting negativity./30

I have known several very successful business people who were very negative, especially in the form of negative gossip about others, and a demeaning, spiteful attitude. All of them have experienced major surprises in their later years, huge losses, and painful diseases. They did not connect the dots, even not when I told them, for their personal pride did just not allow them to say, okay, mea culpa, what I wished to others has come over me. In this sense, I agree with the author that honesty toward oneself is a very important ingredient in the making of success!

When you’re merely reacting to everything around you, it’s entirely too easy to pass the blame, and not take responsibility for your own mistakes. It puts you square into the position of making an excuse for everything. /33

Psychology today has profoundly changed over that science back in the 19th century because today it is acknowledged that we are not eternally molded by our childhoods and early environment, but that humans differ because they react to these experiences, and react differently to them. This is something that is seldom mentioned in popular psychology magazines but it’s absolutely important to know for any person who wants to experience success in life.

The author uses the building of a house as a metaphor for building a new self, and that is a very appropriate comparison. In other words, it’s a sort of inner alchemy.

You are taking the desires that are like coal within you – the possibility of greatness, and refining them until they reach the point of definite greatness – brilliance as a diamond! /37

Inner alchemy is a very old idea going back to the Middle Ages in our culture, but also part and parcel of all the other great cultures of Antiquity, Persia, Greece, Rome, and especially the ancient Chinese and Japanese cultures. What this book is about can pretty much be explained in alchemical terms. See also that Carl Jung used the old alchemical vocabulary to explain the inner transformation that leads to the birth of a new and more authentic self during psychotherapy.

If only people knew that there are many small steps that take them to the top rather than just mile wide giant leaps, they would respect the process more and have more success. /37

In fact, many people give up because they are unable to see the small daily incremental steps they are taking toward success. This is also a question of gratitude, for if we are not grateful for the dollar we earn in a day, we have not deserved the million dollars ten years down the road. If we are not grateful to have the energy to do a small step today, we have not deserved the giant step we have made within ten years or so.

In any undertaking, you must always remember the 5/95 rule: 5% flash – 95% stash. Meaning that the end result being flashed before the eyes is only 5% of what is actually done. 95% of what is actually done is stashed away in the studio, on the set, in the office, on the practice field, in the gym, in the classroom, in the lab, in the factory, or in your shop etc. The inner workings of all things will always remain hidden from the eyes of the average. /52

A very important observation. Especially for people who are addicted to television or the media the impression they usually get is that millionaires, billionaires and ‘stars’ just fall from heaven, or are chosen by an invisible committee of dedicated lovers of their art or business. Not so. We choose ourselves. And while the Jewish people believe they are a chosen people, I say we are the chosen people, all of us, if we dare to choose ourselves! And we do that by valuing our soul’s desire and also our material desires, in fact, all of our desires. We value them, we cherish them, we groom them, then we own them. And by owning our desires, we choose ourselves, and we become our best friend! Remember Gandhi’s saying ‘Do not listen to friends when the Friend in you says: Do this!’

An especially brilliant section of Part I of the book, that I have myself very much enjoyed reading, is the list of people who refused to be stopped. Here it is. They are:

Walt Disney, R. H. Macy, Tyler Perry, Henry Ford, Colonel Sanders, Charles Darwin, Manny Koshbin, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, Oprah Winfrey, Sidney Poiter, Marilyn Monroe, Stephen King, Elvis Presley.

And let me say this. If you find the book for any reason not worth its price—which I hold is unlikely—you should in every case read these pages. They contain pure gold!

Other insights are to be found in much earlier productions, such as the books of Napoleon Hill. What Hill called a Master Mind Group, the author expresses here in his own words:

Associate with people who openly pursue greatness. You are the sum of the 5 people that you spend the most time with. Birds of a feather, flock together. You have to surround yourself with people that most embody the qualities you wish to have. /67

I have some scruples to give 5 stars to this book, while I do believe the first part of the book has deserved it for sure, but as there is a certain incoherence in the second part, I was a bit challenged. But I give the 5 stars for the originality of the ideas that author presents in this book, some of which are uncanny, unusual and not to be found in any other book from the New Thought tradition.

the questions posed under the topics covered are awesome!! Nice life altering guideline
By Jonaah Fire
Stephen has created a process map for changing your life in an instance. The guidelines presented offer a benchmark on which to measure progress and offer real time results. He (The author) caught my attention at the dedication page; the depth of the words lures the reader in with what’s to come. Some things I feel are understood, and are only incorporated to get the reader into the mind state of the books primary message. However, the questions posed under the topics covered are awesome!! Nice life altering guideline. I especially love the section on moving past old friendships since I have been doing this a lot the past 5 year. Another point her stresses is how, as humans, we are meant to be social but to be crucial in who you associate with; my sentiments exactly! I have learned to not associate myself with those who do not appreciate my greatness and have declared all who oppose my enemies; “Naysayers”. Well this is your year helps one to be able to pinpoint exactly who these people in your life are and how to change this to become as great as you think are while proving it so.

Change your life because you want to, not because of what someone thinks, you should be doing or who you are. I refuse to be with someone who is not alignment with the new me and it is working out for me; I am more focused on what it takes to make me better and what is not in line with my emotional compass must be listed as an unnecessary side trip and be learned from quickly.

I am a full-time doctoral student, studying for many things now, so it takes a lot to pull me away from my studies. This special read made it well worth the break away from my studies , although my read was a quick one , this book is meant to be referenced over and over so I will be reading my extensively as time permits.

“Purposely engineering your breakthrough is surround yourself with likeminded people who inspire you to reach for heights higher than you could have ever imagined.” Follow these instructions and have a different year, way better than any year before this, today! Meticulously select each individual you associate yourself with; including family!

Because guess what …. “Naysayers are vampires’ incognito” …“Always be mindful of the levels of reciprocation in any area of networking or any relationship. The harsh truth of the matter is that there are a lot of vampires out there who will suck dry any resource that you have to offer, and think nothing of giving nothing in return.”

Here’s to you changing your year, I would like to get back to my reading lol .
